I should start by making it clear that I used to not only dislike, but loathe the brand Moschino. Not that it really matters, of course. I’m not really their target audience and I’m not spending that kind of cash on clothes and bags. Regardless, let’s talk about Moschino’s fashion for a sec and how they’ve just…got me.
So I was browsing through clothes I sure as hell have no business browsing through and curiously clicked on “Moschino” out of a sort of desire to hate.
Moschino plays a lot with colorful, cartoonish and overall eccentric designs. Often to the point of absurdity.
I used to despise this.
I thought it was pointless and lazy, and just arrogant for a major high-end fashion brand to resort to…whatever that is.
But as I was going through some of these clothes — pink crop tops with My Little Pony on them, and teddy bears in Transformer costumes — on a bleak Sunday afternoon, I found myself smiling…chuckling even.
Then I was really smiling. I mean what the fuck? A shirt that screams ‘MOSCHINO’ in its lovely, elegant font juxtaposed with a rainbow and a smiling pony from a children’s cartoon?????
A few months ago I would have closed the page and rolled my eyes.
But I like it????
The more I go through Moschino’s latest work, the more I obsess. It’s just all so funny. And I love it.
To create a piece of fashion that looks chic, clean, quality, and high-end but simultaneously have it make you laugh and be hilarious…
it’s sort of brilliant.
I don’t want to take away from the commentary that Jeremy Scott’s work frequently makes. There is a self-awareness to each piece.
BUT, I think Moschino also allows people to enjoy a more whimsical and surreal fashion.
There doesn’t always need to be a reason for a design and Moschino often embodies that.
It’s cute and funny. I’m not mad.
Now if someone could buy me that Teddy Bear Transformer bag, that would be awesome.
