Review: Dior Backstage Primer

My skin type: Normal with dry spots (eczema); prone to acne.

I should start this off by making it clear that I am not a primer person. I don’t really think I need it under my makeup because for the most part, my foundation tends to stay on pretty well. Depending on what I use, I may have issues in some spots with creasing, but that’s it.

I’ve tried numerous primers over the years but I haven’t ever been compelled to buy one…

…which is why the Dior Backstage Primer is so special.

About

The Dior Backstage Primer is a hydrating, liquid primer that is meant to make your makeup last longer and blur the look of imperfection. It can be worn alone to give you a blurred or smoothed look.

It comes in a 50ml bottle — so you’re getting quite a decent amount of product for the steeper price tag of $48 CAD.

The liquid is not too runny, and not too thick. It comes in a lovely light beige shade and has a delicate floral fragrance.

Application

First, I used this primer alone without any foundation. I immediately found that

  • it gives you a brighter look
  • smooths the complexion in the way a BB creme would
  • mattifies your skin, but not excessively

I hate mattifying makeup because it makes my already dry skin feel worse.

That being said, I enjoy using the Dior primer because while it does smooth and mattify your face to an extent, it isn’t drying at all. It contains ingredients like Vitamin E to condition the skin.

I can easily say this is a great primer to wear alone on lazy days. Sometimes, I’ll add a translucent powder on top and just be on my way. It looks great, and it’s quick.

The primer also allows for a smooth foundation application and stays put under all that makeup. As I mentioned, though, this is generally not a problem for me.

All in all, this is the only primer I’ve been motivated to buy the full size version of and I’m happy with it. I prefer to wear it alone, but I love how versatile it is.

Now, do I absolutely need it in my drawer? No. While I don’t mind the price for a high-end makeup product, I don’t feel like this — or primers in general — are essential for me, so I won’t be repurchasing this.

You can get the Dior Backstage Face & Body Primer for $48 CAD at Sephora.
