Review: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Intensive Lip Balm

If you read my previous post, you’ll know I have an aversion to average “lip balms”. I find they tend to be slippery, thin, a little too wet, and ultimately pointless. Too many of them rely on petroleum jelly, so that’s a cop out. My lips get scaly and dry (especially around the edges) to the point where they just feel painful, and I need more than just Vaseline to deal. Clearly, my opinion on lip balms is a little skewed.

But leave it to First Aid Beauty to change my mind!

First let’s talk ingredients:

The Ultra Repair Intensive Lip Balm‘s first ingredient is beeswax, and it also relies on things like oatmeal, honey and shea butter to hydrate your lips. No petroleum jelly.

The stuff feels great and is effective. The texture is thick and balmy; it would make a good nighttime lip mask, although I use it throughout the day. I find it’s immediately soothing and completely distracts from any scaliness or rough texture on the lips. Its thickness also means you don’t need a lot at once.

It is difficult to put underneath anything, so I would only layer it on top of other lip products. First apply something thinner, fast-absorbing and hydrating; then apply the Ultra Repair Intensive Lip Balm on top to seal it in. Being totally honest though, as it’s so thick, you may even find it difficult to apply on top of any other products. I don’t mind this at all though, because it works. Use it at night if you find it too much for the day.

With continued use, I’m finding that my lips stay softer for longer.

The lip balm also doesn’t disappear too quickly (unless you’ve layered it with something else). It stays on for at least few hours, and is immediately soothing. Depending on what kind of food you’re eating, it may or may not withstand that.

I actually lost mine for a little while and was devastated because I realized how much I had come to rely on it. I find it very hard to find a lip balm that combats dryness, scaliness, and soothes the pain of dryness. Also, it is rather pricey. (Luckily it was just hiding in my blazer pocket in my closet…)

I’m very happy with this lip balm and I think it’s a worthy investment.

Have any lip balm recommendations?
